Calyptra minuticornis

Family EREBIDAE

Subfamily Calpinae

In Australia Calyptra minuticornis, the Vampire Moth, occurs in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. We have seen this moth between November and April.

Larval foodplants

The caterpillar feeds on Stephania japonica MENISPERMACEAE. They pupate in a cocoon of dead leaves in leaf litter.

The moths are fruit piercers and, in Asia, where they are also found, are said to suck the blood of animals – hence the name, Vampire Moth.
