Family: Cossidae

Goat, Carpenter and Wood Moths: There are 97 named species, many are giant moths. They have long narrow wings and are mostly grey.

Caterpillars are smooth with a few hairs. Many are said to have an unpleasant smell, hence their name Goat Moths. Most are tree borers, some species taking up to three years to mature. The caterpillars pupate within their tunnels. The Witchetty (Wijuti) Grub is generally the caterpillar of Endoxyla leucomochla.

The first two photos below are a hatched Cossid pupa. The following ones could be frass at the entrance of a Cossid caterpillar’s bore hole. These caterpillars are favoured by the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos Zanda funerea here that rip open trunks and branches to find them.
