Subfamily: Saturniinae

Opodiphthera astrophela Emperor Moth
Opodiphthera astrophela is found in Queensland and New South Wales. We have seen this moth from September to April.

Larval Foodplant
We have found caterpillars feeding on RHAMNACEAE: Alphitonia excelsa. They feed communally spreading out over the tree as they grow. They leave the tree when ready to pupate, perhaps as a predator deterrent. We have seen numbers of them walking over the ground surrounding the tree.
They also feed on APOCYNACEAE: Banana Bush Tabernaemontana pandacaqui; CUNONIACEAE: Callicoma serratifolia; RUTACEAE: Flindersia australis
