Ghost Moths -Swift Moths: Primitive moths with about 120 named species in Australia (9 genera) and further species awaiting description.

Examples of frass are shown below. Some larva bore a hole downwards in the trunk but chew a narrow channel to circle it. Is this simply to add to the frass? It does not seem to harm the tree.

The following photos show where birds (probably yellow-tailed black cockatoos) have ripped the trunk to get to the larva in the bore hole. The caterpillar has bored down from the entry point in the trunk.

Hepialidae females produce copious amounts of eggs. They either scatter them in flight or deposit them among host plants near the ground.
The larva either bury in the soil and feed on leaves (Oncopera), or are stem borers (Aenetus and Zelotypia) or root feeders (Abantiades). Some species of Oncopera inhabit rainforest and likely feed on dead leaf litter.
